In the application field of immersed tunnels, the lighting system is crucial for the continuous safe and stable operation of the tunnel. Proper lighting not only ensures driving safety but also enhances the overall operational efficiency of the tunnel and reduces maintenance costs. When designing and selecting lighting fixtures for immersed tunnels, various factors need to be considered, including environmental resistance, lighting effects, energy consumption and cost, as well as maintenance and lifespan.

Importance of Lighting Fixtures in Immersed Tunnel

The environment within immersed tunnels is harsh and complex, with high water pressure, high humidity, and a lack of natural light all year round. Therefore, choosing the appropriate lighting fixtures can significantly improve the visibility inside the tunnel, ensuring the safety of both drivers and pedestrians, while effectively reducing operating and maintenance costs. Incorrect choices may lead to frequent failures and higher maintenance expenses, potentially endangering the safety of tunnel users.

Key Requirements for Immersed Tunnel Lighting Fixtures

When selecting lighting fixtures for immersed tunnels, the following key requirements must be met:

Waterproof Performance: Fixtures must have superior waterproof capabilities to handle high humidity and potential leakage issues.

Corrosion Resistance: Due to the high salt content in the immersed environment, fixture materials need to be corrosion-resistant.

Pressure Resistance: Fixtures need to withstand the high-pressure environment underwater.

Long Lifespan and Low Maintenance: Given the unique environment of immersed tunnels, replacing and maintaining fixtures is very challenging. Therefore, fixtures need to have a long lifespan and low maintenance requirements.

Common Types of immersed Tunnel Lighting Fixtures

LED Lights: Known for their high efficiency, long lifespan, and good durability, with low heat generation, making them suitable for immersed tunnels.

Fluorescent Lights: High light efficiency and quick start-up, but their durability and lifespan are shorter compared to LED lights, making them less popular.

High-Pressure Sodium Lamps: High luminous efficiency, but low color temperature, emitting a yellowish light, suitable for specific environments.

Criteria for Selecting Lighting Fixtures

Environmental Resistance

The harsh environment of immersed tunnels requires fixtures to have high levels of waterproof, dustproof, and corrosion-resistant properties. Materials such as stainless steel and aluminum alloy are commonly used for their corrosion resistance, and the fixtures need to have good sealing.

Lighting Effect

The lighting effect of fixtures directly affects visibility and driving safety inside the tunnel. Factors such as color temperature, brightness, and uniformity need to be considered. LED lights are usually the best choice due to their excellent light efficiency and wide range of color temperature options.

Energy Consumption and Cost

Energy consumption and cost are important factors in selecting fixtures. Although LED lights have a higher initial cost, their low energy consumption and long lifespan offer cost advantages over time. Choosing energy-efficient fixtures helps to reduce long-term operational costs.

Maintenance and Lifespan

In immersed tunnels, maintenance and replacement of fixtures are very difficult and costly. Therefore, selecting fixtures with a long lifespan and low maintenance requirements is crucial. LED fixtures typically have a lifespan exceeding 50,000 hours and require minimal maintenance, making them an ideal choice.

Case Study Analysis

The newly built Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge includes a comprehensive immersed tunnel lighting solution provided by Sansi. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Tunnel, which has a total length of 6,845 meters with eight lanes in both directions, is the longest and widest steel-shell concrete immersed tube tunnel in the world. On both sides of the tunnel, Sansi’s intelligent adjustable full-color landscape light bands can change color based on environmental temperature and traffic conditions. In emergencies, the light bands display red, yellow, and green sections from near to far to guide orderly evacuation: using the intelligent control system, different colors indicate the exact location of fire doors, serving as effective warnings during fire evacuations.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Tunnel utilizes the national 863 technology achievements —Sansi’s reflective lighting LED tunnel lighting fixtures, achieving a “light without visible fixtures” effect. The lighting surface is very uniform, with no visible glare, and no stroboscopic effect. The tunnel lighting adapts to the light inside and outside the tunnel, color temperature data, and traffic changes through intelligent sensing, precisely adjusting the brightness and color temperature of the fixtures, further ensuring driving safety.
